What the numbers say
- The headline rate is falling slowly, from 5.5% in June to 5.0% in August, mostly because rural unemployment dropped.
- Cities are not improving. Urban unemployment edged up from 6.6% in June to 6.8% in August.
- More people are looking for work. The labour force participation rate rose to 55.4% in July 2026 from 54.4% in June.
How India measures unemployment
The PLFS is run by the National Statistics Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The monthly bulletin uses the Current Weekly Status: a person counts as unemployed if they did not work for even one hour in the reference week but were looking for, or available for, work. Because one hour of work is enough to count as employed, the headline rate does not capture underemployment — people working far less than they want to, or in jobs below their qualifications.
Why it matters to young Indians
Youth unemployment is consistently higher than the overall rate, and it was at the heart of the Cockroach Janta Party's rise in 2026. Repeated exam paper leaks, like NEET 2026, add to the frustration of candidates who spend years preparing for a handful of government jobs.
